Thanks Newman Team!

We did it! Together we checked out 336 iPads in 7 hours. Our Newman team of parents, students, teachers, paraprofessionals, and more made this difficult task happen. We are strong together even when are spread apart.

Newman 3-20-20 iPad and Packet Pick-up

Families, we appreciate your support. Many of our student iPads and packets have been picked up.

If you still need to pick up your student's iPad and additional items, please come to Newman between 9-11am tomorrow, Friday, March 19, 2020.

Our two-week school dismissal may be extended. It is very important for each of our students to check-out iPads so that teachers may support student learning though the entire dismissal period.

Thank you,
Newman Elementary Team

Packet Pick-up and Device Check-out Detailed Information

Thursday, March 19 – Drive Thru Method by Grade Level

Hello, Newman Parents. I hope that you and your family members are all well especially with our recent earthquake and COVID-19. We do appreciate your flexibility. Tomorrow, Thursday, March 19 we will check-out iPads to parents of Newman students.

Student ID number needed at check-out:

We will need your student’s ID number for swift check-out. Student ID numbers may be found in PowerSchool. You students use their student ID numbers for lunch and breakfast. Most students will know and refer to their student ID number as their “lunch number”. If you are unable to get your student’s ID number by asking them directly or from PowerSchool, we will need to view your driver’s license or similar ID and student’s name to verify your relationship to your student.

Method of check-out and packet-pick-up:

State COVID-19 recommendations now ask that we keep group numbers lower than 10 people. To make that possible at pick-up we will ask you to remain in your car and form a pick-up line with other parents that will move around our front parking lot as we have done student pick-up and drop-off on previous in session school days. It will be a drive thru type of situation.

Parent/Guardian iPad check-out for student home use:

At check-out parents will be required to sign a form. This form will indicate that you are checking out an iPad from Newman and will return it once we resume physical student attendance. Students are welcome to use home computers instead of their Newman iPad. However, Newman iPads are setup with commonly used apps that will make usage easier for students and parents. It is vital that each student has access to a tablet or computer and internet service during this dismissal from physical attendance.

Schedule by grade level:

9:00-9:30 Kindergarten
9:45-10:15 1st grade
10:30-11:15 2nd grade
11:30-12:00 3rd grade
12:30-1:20 4th & 5th grade
1:30-2:00 6th grade

Internet service option:

As we transition to remote learning in the coming days, a home internet connection is more important than ever. Comcast, a partner of the Salt Lake Education Foundation, is generously offering a program called “Internet Essentials,” which would allow families to receive two free months of Internet service, with the option of continuing thereafter with monthly payments of $9.95 per month. Salt Lake City School District families have been pre-approved for a streamlined enrollment process. Call 855-846-8376 or apply online at www.InternetEssentials.com. You’ll be asked to provide your contact information and school name. No other paperwork is necessary, and if you meet the program eligibility criteria, you will be approved and could have home Internet within 5-7 days. After your free two-month trial, you can cancel at any time. Additionally, please note that the offer does not require a Social Security Number.

West High Latinos In Action students have started tutoring kindergarten students

Twice each week, students from West High (LIA) come to Newman and tutor in our Kindergarten classrooms.  They work with students for 30 minutes using the Dyad reading strategy.  We are very excited about this partnership and look forward to seeing our Kindergartener’s reading skills increase!

Thank you, Wasatch Gardens!

We want to thank Wasatch Gardens for cleaning up and repairing our school greenhouse.  Our students will now be able to use it for the next growing season.

You are awesome!

The greenhouse looks great!
